What is a PPI acid reducer?

A PPI (proton pump inhibitor) acid reducer is a heartburn medication designed to control symptoms for 24 hours. Occasionally, heartburn and acid indigestion can flare up between doses and additional help to relieve symptoms is necessary. Gelusil® is the brand of antacid used most often in clinical studies in patients who experienced heartburn after taking a PPI acid reducer.* Brands of PPI acid reducers include Nexium®, Prevacid®, and Prilosec OTC®.

Can I take Gelusil® with Nexium®, Prevacid®, or Prilosec OTC®?

Yes. Gelusil® can be used with many prescription and over-the-counter 24-hour PPI acid reducers including Nexium®, Prevacid®, Prilosec OTC®, AcipHex®, Protonix®, and Zegerid OTC®, or with H2 blockers like Pepcid® AC®, Tagamet®, and Zantac®. Who should not take Gelusil®?

Consult your doctor before using Gelusil® if you have kidney disease, are on a magnesium-restricted diet, are taking a prescription drug, or are pregnant or nursing. Stop using Gelusil® if symptoms last more than two weeks.
